In the past, nurse-midwives have not been widely utilized in our community. For that reason I consider it a wonderful opportunity to practice alongside Dr. Leitch at Dupont OB/GYN.
Most people associate nurse-midwives with pregnancy and childbirth. While maternity care makes up a large part of midwifery practice, my scope of
practice extends to well-woman care throughout the life cycle. This will complement Dupont OB/GYN’s philosophy of Caring for Women through the Generations.
I have been involved in childbirth in many ways over the past 30 years, from teaching childbirth classes and doing home births, to working in hospital maternity departments and catching babies at a freestanding Birth Center. Most recently I spent five years in the New Life Center at Park view North. Now I will be doing deliveries in the unit where I worked as an
RN. It is exciting to be able to offer midwifery care in such a caring, supportive setting.
When someone asks me about the high point of my experience as a nurse-midwife, I always say there is not one high point, but five. Being able to “catch” all five of my beautiful grandchildren has been a great thrill.
